Beyond the automation of agricultural vehicles, robots offers new opportunities to change practices, especially regarding agroecological principles. However, such practices also require new robotic functionalities whose maturity has not yet been demonstrated. This session is dedicated to investigated the need for robotics in agroecological practices and investigate how the robot may contribute to reduce environmental impact of agriculture, and how to evaluate such benefits.   Pitch session:   #1: « The future of autonomous operation: developing software-defined machines in a collaborative way » by Leandro Zaza, Autonomous Operation Cluster Manager - TTControl   #2: « Tethered UAV and UGV in cooperative long term agricultural scenarios » by Miguel Marques, Researcher, PhD Student - INESC TEC   #3: « Safe VRS corrections for autonomous robots » by Paul Chambon, General Director & CTO - TERIA   #4: « Merging Row Following and GPS-based Navigation » by Jorge Avilés, Post-doc, XLIM Research Institute

The agricultural robots market is projected to grow from USD 13.5 Billion in 2023 to USD 40.1 Billion by 2028, at a CAGR of 24.3%. With dozens of in-field robots models already in activity in Europe and worldwide (25 models in activity in France according to the Observatoire des Usages Numérique en Agriculture), panelists will share their visions:   - From the market analysis Mc Kinsey: key figures and trends that drive the market, - From the dealers perspective: their key role in the industry, and the potential businesses (crop types and functions), - From the industrials and investors point of view: why are ag robotics start-ups so appealing to farmers... so it is for industrials and investors too!

Since the first robots were used in the fields, nearly 10 years ago, safety has become the most important topic for both manufacturers and users. The robotics companies work closely with advanced technologies to avoid any human issues when it comes to autonomous vehicles.   How safe are autonomous vehicles for farming operations and farm employees? Where do  we stand at the legislative level ?   The 1st edition of The International Agricultural Autonomy Symposium is a good format for exchanging ideas, sharing experiences and co-build the next steps of the AgRobot deployment.

In agricultural context, robots have to face different kind of task and situation. Whether to adapt behavior to different situations or for safety purposes, it appears necessary for robots to be able to perceive and understand the environment around them. This session aims at investigating the different solutions allowing a robot to be aware of the different situations it can encounter and have an overview of decision making mechanisms.   Pitch sessions:   #1: « Vineyard Rows Detection using IMU and GNSS » by Jorand Gallou, PhD Student - University of Roma Tre   #2: « Optimizing Machine Routes for Agroecological Criteria » by Dr Muhammad Khan, SVP of Innovation, Verge Ag   #3: « Advancing Agriculture through Unmanned Robotic Systems: Farm Crop Mapping Utilizing Crop and Weed Detection » by Maciej Szymkowski, AI Team Leader - Lukasiewicz Research Network - Poznan Institute of Technology   #4: « A Comparative Study of LiDAR-based Row Detection Algorithms in Agricultural Scenes » by Florian Gaurier, Study Engineer - INRAE

Progresses made by roboics allow to see more and more robots in fields to help farmer in their everyday life. However, the integration of robots into farm management systems, as well as the appropriation of these new technologies, still raises a certain number of questions. In this session, the actual use of robots in task plaification, as well as the communication capabilities will be discussed. In particular, the problem of interoperability and the way farmers handle robotics technology will be investigated. This point may also be linked with the topic of safety and legal aspects.   Pitch sessions:   #1: « Smart precision treatments by SCORPION robotic solution »" by André Silva Aguiar, Researcher- INESC TEC   #2: « Enhancing Sensing Efficiency in Soybean Plantations in Brazil using Quadruped Robotics » by Heinz Rahmig , AI Research -CEIA UFG   #3: « Co-creation of smart technologies for a more efficient agrifood production: learning from the past for inspiring the future »  by Catia Pinto, Executive Director- Associação SFCOLAB - Laboratório Colaborativo para a Inovação Digital na Agricultura   #4: « CropCraft: A Procedural World Generator for Robotic Simulation of Agricultural Tasks » by Cyrille Pierre, Research Engineer - INRAE

The French carrot producers are submitted to significant weed management difficulties in organic and conventional agriculture: a pedoclimatic context favourable to weeds, successive withdrawals of active ingredients, labour recruiting difficulties...  The inter-row is rather well managed by the joint use of chemical products and mechanical weeding. However, row management is complicated and is subject to technical impasses. Faced with this observation, more and more agro-equipment companies are investing into new technological solutions (laser, electric, microwave, pulsed light etc.). Carottes de France wants to give them the keys to understand the carrot sector in France and the producer expectations. Carottes de France as drawn up specifications for innovative companies: description of soil and climate characteristics, of sowing patterns and technical itineraries; acceptability thresholds in terms of precision, efficiency level, selectivity; possible technical characteristics (plant stages, mode of action, work output). The main elements of this specifications will be presented by the Project Manager (Emilie Casteil) and a carrot producer of Nouvelle-Aquitaine (Clément Letierce).

For this 5th Scientific Workshop, students, researchers, large companies and growers will have the chance to debate important - and sometimes controversial - topics:
  • Agricultural Robotics: to which agricultural and economic models are they suited?
  • Robotized farmers’ dependence and autonomy
  • Sobriety
The objective is to encourage World FIRA participants and agRobotics experts to critically examine competing ideas and positions, question established norms, and devise better-researched and fairer solutions.

The question « What’s the worst that could happen? » is essential when discussing GNSS for autonomy.

Real-world scenarios can be challenging and unpredictable - imagine a machine wakes up without knowing its location or orientation, sensors are not synchronized properly, or while operating the machine impacts an obstacle on the edge of the field because of a bad position, or poor surveying techniques and data handling.

Scenarios like those emphasize the criticality of precise and reliable positioning, not only from hardware but process. For situations where high levels of redundancy and diagnostic capability are required and to minimize the risk of the worst-case scenarios, Hexagon | NovAtel’s GNSS hardware and software solutions are designed and built to provide the level of positioning integrity, reliability and redundancy needed for autonomous applications, from driver assistance through to partial, conditional and full autonomy.

The industry is moving away from research and development and highly technically supervised operations to production and scale with machines being in the hands of farmers...What’s the worst that could happen?

CNES is the French space agency and has been created in 1961. Launchers, satellites, planet probes, rovers are robots needing a very high level of autonomy and safety. These requirements are more and more applicable to agricultural robots that means that part of our design and validation methods could be used.
Accuracy and safety, for the majority of autonomous robots, rely strongly on navigation signals emitted by satellites. In the frame of our program Connect by CNES, several examples of technical or financial support of companies involved in this market will be presented.
